As a Dutchie I wander why the US Mint decides to place commemorative lincoln cents in circulation of Abraham Lincoln in 4 stages of his life during the year 2009. My question is: will these coins eventually circulate among the US citizens as the statequarters do, or will they only be struck for collectors. Seems to me that the low value of a 1 cent coin is not worth the effort ...

Eric -
It's because it is the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's appearance on the cent, and the 200th anniversary of his birth. The mint is also celebrating this year with a Lincoln commemorative silver dollar.

New Cents are struck each and every year, obviously, and these are just a continuation of the Cent, but with a change (marking/celebrating Lincoln as pointed out). These will be "circulating" cents just as previous years.....same as the State Quarters. And so, if one purchases the Proof Set for this year....you'll have proof versions of these new Cents. People, I'm sure will go to their banks and get rolls or boxes of these if/when they can to collect high grades of them. As pointed out....the Commemorative Lincoln Silver Dollar will be "struck only for collectors", as per usual with each years Commem's. Some people will collect everything new with Lincoln......some just one or the other.

The Proof sets, Silver Proof sets, and Uncirculated Mint sets would include all the ( new) Lincoln cents, dime, nickel, ( all the new) US Terr. qtrs., ( all the new) Pres. Dollars, Native American dollar, and Kennedy half for 2009. THERE'S A BUNCH OF COINS IN JUST ONE "MINT SET" THIS TIME !..... this'll be a whopper ! And those Lincolns in Copper would be............ SWEEEEEEEET ! .....I hadn't heard that one.

Oh my goodness! I did not even count the coins he listed; I just saw that he originally had "34 coins......16 Denver and 16 Philadelphia" and realized it was inaccurate! For what is is worth, '2 + 2' does equal '5'... for very large values of '2'...
