Hi All, "New" to collecting but coins are in my blood. My grandfather owned a junk yard and had coins coming out of his ears...I have a pitiful few and none of the ones he left for me (that weren't pilfered by others before I reached adulthood) are especially valuable. (As a matter of fact I doubt if all told they are worth over $50.) But I digress! I've recently been buying a lot of coins and I don't want to get taken advantage of. I especially like the silver stuff. Like my grandfather I'm not opposed to an occasional barter or two. That said, I've listed one and only one coin on ebay and I'm interested in what you guys think of its condition. I hope I'm not breaking a rule and I'm not asking anyone to bid on it, etc. I'm simply hoping to check my gut on what a realistic grade is. Any opinions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks! <<<edited by Tights24 to remove external link from new member. Thank you for the actual pictures below. >>>

Can't access ebay from my work computer but will do so once I get home. First off, to the forum and the collecting world. Hopefully others will be able to comment on the coin listed on ebay.

oh now... those are some nice pictures! Quote: coins coming out of his ears sounds a bit painful.. Quote: pilfered been there too! Quote: don't want to get taken advantage of nobody does..! Quote: realistic grade I've only risked grading one coin so far and I was WAY off.. so I'm holding any other grading in abeyance for the nonce ;) That being said.. this coin is gorgeoous. Nice lines, great luster, no major bumps, abrasions, etc.. Alright, twist my arm.. I'm guessing MS64. Simply because I have a 64 and it looks about this lovely ... it does not have marks (scratch?) on the obv. like this one does, but on the other hand mine doesn't have quite the luster factor and overall .. whatchacallit.. impression. (I thank God every day grading is objective!) Every coin is different. In a good mood I could go 65. my opinion only: she's beautiful, and if she were mine, I'd keep her, and keep her very close! If you get her graded, please let us know the result!

Very nice looking Morgan, I think because of the several large scratches on the obverse it will drop the grade down a bit. I'm going to say it would grade MS-62. If it didn't have the scratches it would probably garde MS-64.

Yes welcome! Wish I could take pictures that good, it's point and shoot for me or poke and hope, I dunno? As far as grading goes, I'll leave that to the Morgan people here. Looks nice to me. If I had to guess at first glance MS-63. But I lean more to AU-58 to MS-61. I think it is a very common date and they might be more picky giving it more than that. Sometimes I think tougher dates get a little forgiveness in grading. I do see some contact marks and light wear on highpoints. Such as the one hair curl near the bottom right, some light wear on the jaw. On the reverse just the slightest wear on wing tips, a hint of wear on arrows and maybe on OF in OF AMERICA. Plus a few green spots of foreign matter.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the help as I get started.
As far as getting it graded....is that worth it? Doesn't it cost $30 or so to do that? Is this coin valuable enough to make that investment worthwhile?
Thanks again!

I personally would not clean it, or dip it. I would not get it graded. Regardless of the grade the value is not worth the cost. I have these numbers from numismedia.com and unless it was MS65 or better, where the value goes up considerably, I just think it would be happy in a nice safe coin holder. Please stick around and learn. You might have something that you wouldn't think was worth a dime that beats the pants off your nice Morgan dollar here. 1921 Morgan AU55 18 MS60 24 MS61 25 MS62 28 MS63 32 MS64 42

I'm thinking MS63. The size and quantity of the marks on the obverse are not so important in this case as their location in a prominent area. Thanks to the oblique pic of the obverse, focused in *just* the right spot, I'm able to see the details above the ear which make me sure it's Uncirculated. There's a certain "graininess" to that area which disappears almost immediately in circulation. The reverse is far better, but the worst side tells in grading. Value in MS63 is $30-40. There are no outstanding features of any of the rare VAM's for that date. Now for the bad news. The green dots on the reverse are almost certainly PVC damage. I'd strongly recommend an acetone bath for this coin, unless that green shows up clearly on the ebay auction pics. Welcome to Coin Community, superunderdoggie. You made my day posting a 1921 Morgan for your first coin here. So, you have your frst two terms to Search the forum for. First, acetone - using this stuff requires caution and a large dose of respect, and it's imperative that you know what you're doing prior to. Second, the term "VAM." I can't be responsible for what finding out about VAM's does to you.

I think it's a solid MS-63. I'm no expert, but I own quite a few of these and know a little about grading them. SuperDave is DEAD ON CORRECT, you need to soak that in acetone before the PVC green stuff starts eating into the surface. Acetone will not harm the coin and it will completely remove the PVC.
