Found this smooth-rim RNR quarter and would appreciate advice on what to call this condition, and if any value above 25 cents.

The reeding has been removed after it was struck.
Considered damage with no premium.

How much does it weigh? Considering the significant damage on the obverse, I will have to say the missing reeding is PMD as well.

Looks like early stage (mechanical) spooning.

Thanks to all for the replies. The coin weighs about 0.04g less than a couple of UNC/AU quarters from same year, so yes, "reeding removed" makes a lot of sense.

I'm very new to coin roll hunting (this was maybe the 40th roll of quarters I've ever searched). For now, I'm happy just to try to build a collection of everything from 1965-present, including all the different mint marks, and then to try to find nicer and nicer specimens as time goes on. I love learning about history and minting processes etc. Who knew split serifs could be the source of so much excitement?

I'll definitely keep a space in my collection for varieties and oddities, but I think I'll just toss this one back. Someone taking a grinder to a coin doesn't seem all that display-worthy.

Not that I'm complaining. In the same roll as the reed-less coin, I found a 1964-P, and I know that's worth more than 25 cents!

Thanks again to all for the warm welcome. I fear this will mostly be a one-way street, but maybe someday I'll be able to answer someone's question! In the meantime, I'll enjoy reading all the back-and-forth, and yes, I'll make sure I include year and mint mark in future topic headers!

Wow a silver quarter in a roll! That is rare at this time, great find!

This coin may be a keeper for educational purposes. I set aside a lot of oddities myself, just make sure they are labeled specifically and accurately.

looks like the marks on the face and , neck are from the tool they held it with when they sanded it
