I was thinking of buying some 40% ikes but was wondering how they were originally packaged? Did they come in the proof sets or were they in a package of there own... I Think I remember seeing the unc. 40% ikes for in the blue envelope but what about the proof silver Ikes

Blue Ikes came in a blue envelope with a small chip as well Brown Ikes came in a "sealed" plastic slab inside a cardboard box. Terrible toning or spots from the chemical reactions from the materials so it can be hard to find one that is flawless.

Also, I agree with GO's statements about getting problem-free ones.
I have bought several Blue Ikes online and have learned my lesson. Don't! 90% of the pictures are worse than the ones GO posted, there are huge issues with hazing on the Brown Ikes and many, many of the Blue Ikes are pitted with bag marks.
If you're just looking to get one of each year, I'd highly recommend buying only when you can inspect them personally. There aren't that many of them.
Just to repeat myself: getting problem-free examples of these is not as simple as writing out the check.

I find this topic interesting. I have an Ike in a plastic case (i guess what you are referring to as brown) I noticed it is toning around the edges and on the far edge it is a hazy shade while the inside of that is more rainbow. Does it lower my coins value if that haziness is there?

Recently, I went a bit over-board buying Ikes online. I bought from one seller who happens to sell a lot of coins, not just IKEs - so there was no separate pic for each coin. Most coins were in good condition, but enough have imperfections that I question buying anything online without the pic. (My problem is that I pay with money orders, and don't use credit - so it's hard to find a seller willing to accept anything other than paypal).
I got what I thought were good deals, but there is the consideration of buying inferior IKEs. I have now filled my book, so I will not be upgrading unless I see an IKE in person.

ok, now that the problem with the brown box ike's has been brought to light. i have some that are just down right ugly, hased around the edge. if I dip or clean them people talk about me and whisper behind my back. so what if I set them free from there case and use acetone, will this clean them up?
