Can someone explain why the 1946 whaet penny with no mint mark has value? ebay has sold items in the four figure range down to cents. I feel like a blind man batting against Bob Gibson.

They made almost a billion of them... Unless you are seeing some in MS condition I have no clue...

Not worth much, even up to MS-65 — a couple of bucks on the upper end.

Nothing. A normal 1946 cent would not be worth $1k+. I looked on ebay to see what listing you may be referencing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/313865719247It says "best offer accepted", doesn't mean it sold for $1500. Just means seller was asking for $1500 and sold it for an unknown amount to someone who made an offer. Seller has 0 feedback and a number of similarly ridiculously priced coins. I can assure you that coin is just a normal '46 and it did not sell for $1500. If there was a $1500 transaction related to that listing it wasn't in exchange for the coin that's for sure.

My bad. Thats an old trick with a shill bidder that did not pay but leaves a record for others to see. Is this why old people get scammed? My guard instincts are failing me.

Yeah, you will see a kazillion of insanely priced junk and common coins literally valued less than a dollar being sold for exorbitant prices, like Etsy, ebay, etc. There is a thread on this site about the worst coins being sold on these venue's. Example: I have a common as dirt 1987-D Lincoln Cent with a bunch of errors (actually road rashed or very banged up coins, aka post mint damage, PMD for short) and I call it a huge unique mint error (it is no such thing) and I post it on Etsy for 35,000.00+ dollars, hoping to make a quick buck. This happens all the time, and it just comes with the territory of coin collecting online; we just have to know how to navigate it, and asking questions along the way like you are doing

Before you buy, get to know what is really going on with a coin. Asking later does not help you. (other than knowing now what you really have bought)

At least you are getting to know what you have and aprox values for them. Instead of finding out later, if someone buys them, then you will know later if you sold the gold mine, and you didn't end up with the shaft. (Who knows, the bug may hit you yet, and you will become hopelessly addicted like us)

Does purchasing a microscope and triple beam scale mean I am already addicted?

All you have to do is look at all of his listing. All common coins that he is trying to get someone to bite on.
