I've never posted on this side of the forum but I found this coin very interesting. Not sure how they came to the conclusion that this was the first( possibly the die state). It just sold for 12 million USD. Here's the link. https://www.PCGS.com/news/america-f...ilver-dollar |

I don't know much about this piece, but I've seen this coin before, and it seems to be the face of all 1794 dollars. According to the PCGS article, this coin is the only coin that is graded as a specimen, and it is graded SP-66. A specimen is similar to a proof, so I am guessing this was a presentation piece, therefore believed to be the first coin stuck from the press. 66 is an extremely high grade, especially regarding this coin is 228 years old!
Too bad it has those ugly adjustment marks!! Now thinking about it, why would a specimen piece have adjustment marks?

We sold this coin to a private client. All coins are in demand at the moment in this vibrant market, but in particular rarities like this 1794 $1 are coveted even more than a few years ago. (We were also the winning bidder for the PCGS 66+ CAC example that sold for $6.6m last August, which looks cheap today).

Read about this the other day. An amazing specimen and a smart acquisition in todays market by GC. Quote:

Thank you for the reply. I assumed that someone had a particular interest in these gems and, perhaps, GC was the broker. Just getting a glimpse of coins like these is a great experience.
