An Edward I penny turned up at my LCS. We don't see many of them at this store or in my part of North America and I've always wanted one. I don't know enough about them to take a stab on ebay, and I've done some research on what to look out for re: copies and fakes. My LCS is very reputable but probably doesn't deal with these much. My question is were/are they faked and counterfeited very much? The price is consistent with most I've seen in similar condition on online shops but don't want to take a chance on it if there are known to be a lot of fakes. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

I haven't seen a lot of fakes. I imagine it's quite difficult to fake them convincingly for the price, not least because you have to get a lot of minor details correct for it to be attributable. There are a lot of genuine coins out there. These are examples: https://hallshammeredcoins.com/?pag...et=0&type=19

If I was faking English hammered coins, I'd go for Edward V or Richard III, or one of the Saxon kings. Edward I is one of the cheapest.

It might be more likely you'd come across a contemporary counterfeit. Pennies of the Edwards were copied across Europe (and are callled 'esterlins'). But they're usually easy to spot, due to the legends. Some are deliberately different so you can't really be tricked.

Here's an esterlin copied by Louis IV of Bavaria in 1325-1328 from an Edward III penny - but notice the legend says 'LVDOVICVS ROM REX', the mint is 'AQVE / nSIS' and there's an eagle in first quadrant on the back.

Sorry no photos. Don't have it in hand. I wouldn't even mind a contemporary copy. I just don't want one that's a recent fake.
