Hello, literally brand new to this. We found this just laying around, and while it's clearly in rough shape, were wondering what is causing the coloration?

Environmental damage of some sort, hard to say exactly what.
It is just a spender now, especially with the damage.

Just a spender. Not a plus for the coin. Damage is never a plus for a coin. Just face value now.

@cul, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that the odd coloration is damage of some sort. Could even be an old layer of paint.
