I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what it is I've come across on 1956D, I know that only P and D were minted that year but if you look at the 5 in photo it looks to me as if the 5 was punched over an S in the upper left portion. I've stared at it too much already debating on what it actually is so any suggestions on what it could be is much appreciated.

That's not a stray S 'letter'. It appears to be an emergent die chip or possibly pushed metal from a lateral hit.

looks like a chip to me on the 5 between the top cross bar and the loop, but a circulation hit at the top left corner of the 5

Crack and and the eventual die chip along with coin contact. The die was normal, but die events with of aging, cracking events, and the and circulation damage altered this coin. A lot of the 1950's Wheat cent dies were way over used.
