I have hundreds of Morgan's and quite a few Peace dollars but this is my first Trade dollar. The color is lovely. I don't think I caught it at all . Very nice looking in hand minus a very old scratch at are 11 to 12 o'clock . It does not distract in my opinion due to where it is at. Just curious how you all see it and if you think it would detail. I would think it would on a Morgan but I have heard they are not as tough on Trade dollars though I do not know that for a fact. I do see straight graded cleaned looking Trade dollars on the bay so I suspect that this may be true. To me this coin looks very original. Has a little luster still around the date and letters on the reverse. I think it is XF-40 maybe XF-45 just not sure on the scratch.     Edited by JasonKflo 03/12/2022 4:39 pm

EF-40 sounds right, but looks cleaned.

I am at XF 40. From your photos the coin's surface does not appear to be original.

XF40 sounds right. Market acceptable. Reverse looks better than obverse. Nice.

Most business strike Trade dollars have old cleanings. I would doubt this is an exception, but I can sure be wrong sometimes. That one that Slider23 posted, for example. Coulda sworn that was a proof coin.

Coinfrog if I could I would but all I have is a I Phone and not sure how to take better pics. I try my best. Coin is darker in hand than pics indicate . It doesn't look cleaned in hand for sure. Has nice looking skin . Will let you know though once I send it in what they say. Only concerning thing with this one to me would be the scratch.

Just because a coin finds it way into a straight grade holder does not mean that the coin has original skin. The TPG's straight grade coins all the time that have market acceptable cleaning. I do believe that the coin has a better than even chance to straight grade. We both know that there are lots of Trade dollars that we would not buy because the coin has been cleaned or dipped in a straight grade holder. Congratulations on owning a Trade dollar. If you get the coin into a straight grade holder, I would consider it a strong first buy of a Trade dollar.

For sure , there are many straight graded cleaned coins in TPG holders no doubt. I have no experience with Trade dollars but many I have seen do to appear to have been cleaned. This one I would say is not one of them but thats me looking at it in hand. Looks pretty original to me.

Tried with different lighting and a white background. You can see it still has some luster more so on the reverse.

Here is a 1875 S XF45 CAC that I believe has original skin. Compare the area around the stars and date to the 78 S. How did the 78 S get a perfect halo around the stars? On the 78 S note the color between the numbers on the Date. Someone cleaned between the numbers 1 and 8, 8 and 7 but missed cleaning between the 8 and 7.
