the Lincoln Cent WAM and CAM get a lot of press, I made a list of about 12 errors/varieties of the LMC to search rolls for and notice that the majority of them are P mint, the exception being the 92D. Since I get very few P mint strikes in my area (Texas), I was wondering if anyone west of the Mississippi River is finding any WAM or CAM other than the 92D?

First thing to note is that the 92D Close AM is a very rare bird. You are very unlikely to find one in any condition.

I lived in Florida for a year and found three 2000 and one 1998 cent out of less than $25 in change...prior to that I lived in Missouri and had never found any of them because Missouri is in the Denver mint district and gets D mint coins. Now that I live in Missouri again, I don't expect to find any of them.

I have searched thru many boxes of cents. Lost count a while back. I have never found any Wide AM's, just a few Canadians and Wheats.
However I do get a good mix of both mints here in North Carolina.

i think most of the dever mints I get here in NC is normlally 25% and the newer D,s are harder to find in a good AU and San Francisco are a lucky find

I live in Kentucky, and get a pretty good mix of both Mints. I've had great luck with Wide AM's, finding 5 1998, 1 1999, and I'm up to 16 2000's. Like Yotie, S mints are a scarce find, and I go through at least $100 in cents per week.

I will be impossible to calculate the exact probability, since it is unknown how many were struck, how many have been removed from circulation (collected, lost, etc), but since a joint probability is the multiple of each (probability of A times the probability of B and on and on) When I consider the number of P mints in this area, the rarity of the item, it the needle becomes lost in a haystack the size of Dallas! plus, if I lived in the vicinity of such an avid searcher as coppercoins, et al, the probability would get even lower! Its almost like a waste of time to search penny rolls. Still miracles happen.

California is pretty much disqualified from finding wide AMs, although I did find two of the Close AM proofs. (but not in change)
Rest in Peace

I'm in south Florida and go through about $100/week in cents. I'm noticing very few D mints with an occasional S. About 12-15% copper with a wheat every 4 or 5 rolls. I've also found 11 dimes,a lot of Canadian cents and coins from 5 other countries including 2 English 1 cent pieces a bit larger than our cent. So large in fact they were stuck in the roll. So far 2 1998 WAMs & 1 2000. No 1999s. With each new roll I think of what Mel Fisher said, "Today's the day." He searched for almost 20 years on the high seas to find the Atocha so sitting at my desk going through cents isn't all that bad.

Aside from the intrinsic value and enjoyment provided by roll searching, it seems to me to be a loosing proposition, the time invested yeilds a very poor return financially, would be better to do something else and just buy a WAM or CAM and have money left over from the other activity. I will probably go back to roll searching only when it is impossible to do something else due to weather etc.

Thats what I do basicbob, when the weather is bad I do all may sorting. I search the coins year round, Going through rolls all winter gives me a big enough hoard to keep me busy with the scope all year.

While the weather is nice I like to spend my free time daylight hours searching the countryside for Large Coppers and silver with the metal detector

The reason you don't find WAM cents from Denver is because the WAM diesare dies made from hubs intended for Proof dies. Philadelphia makes both business strike dies for themselves and the proof dies for San Francisco. Denver opened up it's own die shop around 1995 (don't know exact date) and they only make business strike dies for their own use. So Denver receives the Business strike Master hub from Philadelphia and takes it from there. The only way they could make a WAM would be if Philadelphia sent them a Proof design master hub and if that happened then ALL of the Denver cents that year would be WAM.
