I found this awhile back and just thought it was cool. I'm thinking a bored kid at the 2004 WI State Fair. (Just trying to make a little funny tonight)

My vote is nail polish, but could be any sort of paint/ink.

Interesting, if nothing else. I might get my Sharpies out and conduct an experiment on a few common quarters.

I hadn't thought of that one Spence. Yes. Very well could be nail polish. Doubt a Sharpie would hold up that well.

Hahah ijn. Not that it matters because it's obviously nothing but I guess that's just how our brains work. An explanation so to speak.

I've told this story here before, but when I was a kid I worked at a restaurant with a juke box. The manager used to seed this machine with quarters to provide ambience or get customers to also want to spend money on music. He used nail polish on his quarters so that when he emptied the box, he could separate out his quarters from those spent by patrons. I'm sure there are hundreds of other reasons to paint coins, but that is the one that comes to my mind first.

At one time they were putting stickers over the design to make a colorized version of these States quarter to pad their pockets with. Selling them to the "Rubes". Now back into circulation the affect is being worn off of the coins. (people actually thought these quarters were coin to be worth a fortune for the Grand Kids. People were making money on selling stuff to the non coin collectors in hopes of a windfall later one. Well, they all got the wind, and the fall, from the bottom falling out of these quarters. Thus we are still finding them spent all the time now. The bubble has burst!

I'd heard the altered colors for the Jukebox before. I feel it is true.

They were at arcades and places like that to put into the games. Pinball or Pacman or whatever. I guess they wanted to track their quarters.
