Guys, I have never seen one quite like this one, obvious an error, but what is its cause?

perhaps due to a machine, but you can make as many more of those as you like by using a sturdy pair of pliers or metal cutters

99% of incuse marks on a coin are post strike damage. Only about 1% are a mint error. People love to make a coin look like mint errors, hoping to cash in on the untrained. But knowing that an altered coin is just a face value coin, will keep you a lot safer. Knowing the 1% errors will also help you know what is real and fake.
