I had a similar situation ten years ago. I did not technically inherit the silver dollars but my dad gave me 12 different "common" silver dollars, some mint some not. He was getting on in years and these were duplicates. He did not have a complete set himself, his main love was 50 cent pieces.
At that point I only collected smaller denomination Canadian coins. The only silver dollar I owned was a 1967. After looking at them for a few months, I decided to try to collect all years 1935-1967. Using mainly
ebay I built up my collection over a couple of years, finally completing my collection by purchasing a 1948 at a coin show.
My dad has since passed on, but my silver dollar collection is now my pride and joy and I think of my dad every time I look at those coins. Well, I am rambling on and not really answering your question. I could have sold those coins at the time for melt value but I am glad that I kept them.
