Checked DDO 1 - DDO 9 and didn't find anything that looked like this. Looks to me like a defective or deteriorating die.

Though this coin was found in circulation and has some wear and PMD the East to West raised section of the 2nd lower leg of number 9 doesn't appear to be PMD.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks.

Odd-looking as it is, probably circulation damage.

Looks like the obverse die was over polished and made the devices shorter/narrowed. Probably the reverse was also polished as well. Note the weakening on the nose/brow and the back of the neck. The dies were probably Feeder Finger Damage.

Looks like PMD to me.
Can't see any way that could happen during the striking of the coin.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm leaning more to internal die or chip damage as it would be a more reasonable assumption than PMD. This deformation isn't gouging, denting or moving of struck metal from one place to another. I just don't see how the addition of metal, configured as this is, could be the result of PMD. I may be wrong but don't associate PMD with addition of material to the coin. Is it possible this is a retained interior Cud? Also, the tapering of the lower serif of the 2 in 1972 to a point is not consistent with any of the 1972 die I've researched.
