This key date example has a scratch on the reverse through the eagle's head and a deep scratch between the letters E and R on the reverse, a couple of minor scratches under the wing and looks like it may of had an old cleaning. The coin was straight graded by NGC and CAC approved NGC's grading with a green sticker. I am interested on your thoughts on grade and coin. Seller's photos.

Tricky to grade these worn pre-1925 SLQs. I think this one might have squeaked out a F-12 from NGC. The scratches are minor enough to allow a straight grade.
Decent looking coin overall.

Here is a coin Id love to cherrypick out of a bowl of other slq's! Looks like a straight VF-20 to me.
Rest in Peace

I just can't see this coin going further than F-12 . On a further note even on a key date I am not happy with a coin that does not have a full date .

Yeah, I see what you are saying Tony, full dates are nice, but for some key dates are becoming vanishingly hard to find, so for me, a partial but obvious date in average circulated coins is something I will very much settle for, especially slq's. To me, the date is an exception in terms of grading these, meaning one could have a legit VF slq with the date barely visible (before 1925) due to circulation. (My 1921 key is a classic VG-8 with only the first and last 1's in the date visible.)

T-BOP, you and I are on the same page. I have started looking for a circulated 1923 S with a full date, problem free, original surface. With the low mintage and worn off dates of the 1923 S, it is going to be a hard find. It appears that the TPG's have relaxed their circulated grading standards on SLQ coins with full dates from 1917 T2 to 1924 S, and it really shows up on the 1919 S, 1919 D , 1921 and the 1923 S.

NGC and CAC should both probably be embarrassed by that one. Overgraded and not details? Really?
I think F12 is reasonable but it should really be F Details.

Must have been sent in by a powerhouse that gets special treatment (HA, large dealer, etc.) or else someone won the Lucky Grading Lottery

I wonder if this is part of a trend I've been noticing where key date coins are being graded quite a bit more loosely than regular dates in the same coin series.

Edit: I would add to that -- if you have a better date early SLQ such as a 1916, 1921, 1923-S with a full date and it is in a F12, F15, VF20 holder -- when they start allowing non-full-date examples of those same coins into holders at identical grades, that is doing a great disservice to the full date coins and to their owners. Same thing when "borderline FH" and "almost FH" coins start sneaking into FH graded holders. It's harmful to collectors and to the market both.

The following is a quick past auction search on full dates sold for the 1923 S:
F12 - I could find no photos with full dates. The full date may exist, but could not find a photo.
F15 - I could find photos of one or two with full dates. These were coins graded before 2008 and sold for a premium.
VF20 - The full date starts showing up on the VF20
VF25 - About 50/50 on full dates.
VF30 - Most of the VF30 have full dates.
VF35 - All the examples I looked at had full dates.

I'll say F-15 to VF-20, in-between there.

This is another poster coin for buy the coin and not the plastic or sticker. My grade would be net graded to F15 or VF Details. I have purchased and summitted a lot of coins to CAC and they typically sticker the high end of the grade. I have no idea why this coin has a sticker as I would put it at the bottom of the grade. The coin is for sale on ebay by one of the large coin dealers for $1170 or best offer.

Late to the party. Sans the weak date, remaining detail looks VF20 to me, even CAC worthy at VF20. VF25 seems a bit high. The full slab, grade reveal pic looks better than the first set of pics.

Seems properly graded. Guess it got a pass for the reverse scratch.
