As I'm photoing and posting this the less excited I am getting. Before the acetone bath in the 2x2 I thought I might have a chance at higher Au. Now I think I'll be lucky to avoid details. Where do you think this 'original surfaces' Mercury dime falls? Edited by captainkurt 03/26/2022 08:33 am

Acetone is way over-recommended on this forum, and can indeed detail coins.
It's true that acetone does not react with silver or copper. It can, however, alter the properties of oil, tarnish and debris living on the coin in unusual and unsightly ways.
I'm not saying that's what's happened here. I might have tried acetone with this coin too. But the pics aren't promising. The dip is pretty obvious, and something weird is happening by the date.
Honestly, your coin has near-AU sharpness perhaps, but with zero luster and a weak date, it would never grade beyond XF-40 in any case.

The gouge by the date will detail the coin, almost looks like a dug coin

Are those scratches between I and B in Liberty? Does look like a once-buried coin. I lean toward EF details.

The coin came from the same collection as most of my Mercury dimes. They were stored in a cloth bag loose with handfuls of other coins. Here is a picture of the 1916 from the same bag. Also acetone dipped. P.s. - not by me! Here is one that looks the most like the the original coin posted but without the acetone dip.

The obverse bust is full of pock marks and a scratch . Reverse looks pretty decent .Reverse 40+ obverse 30, net 35 . Not sure if obverse will detail this coin .

the cheeks are pretty chewed up. look to the left of the date under the bust. hard to tell if there is damage and displaced metal there. also looks like some minor pitting on both sides
i think its XF details
post separate thread if you want the others assessed

XF Details ED If the 20D was my coin, I would make it a pocket piece for about 3 weeks and handle the coin two or three times a day to put skin oil on the coin. The coin has terminal black toning. If you turn it into a pocket piece, some of the black terminal toning will come off.
