Hi all. Got this back in change the other day. Would this be considered a pre Cud? Looks like something by the mint mark and other places but Die Deterioration makes it hard to see and photograph. Thanks for any info

Thanks SaturnD51. The crack may or may not touch the rim. It's hard to tell

A Cud affects the outside edge of the die. This is just a die crack so far. Soon the die will develop chips on the die crack area and after a couple of hundred thousands more strikes, the die may develop rim to rim die crack. Later on in this dies life, a piece may break off the outside edge of the die and show a raised area that matches the void on the die that broke off the die, then it is a Cud. A Cud is a die retirement issue. A crack is just like a wrinkle to a senior. Many more will come as the die continues to age. A Cud will look like this:

The die that struck your coin is no where near the Cud die state yet. also when a Cud forms on one side, a reverse weakness will be seen on the opposite side of the coin. Note on the coin you can see the arrow on the weaker strike area.

Thanks coop. Looks like the crack goes towards the rim on the right side. Hard to see because there's a lot of deterioration

The way I remember it is, a pre Cud has to go the edge on both sides, Before that it's a die crack

Thanks Cujohn. Hopefully this die made it to the Cud stage. Looks like it was getting close. Funny thing that it resembles the Cud coop posted

The line in the date disappeared in this photo because of the deterioration. You can see a faint line from the bust to the rim on the left side also. Not to say this is a pre Cud but I think this die may have possibly produced a Cud. Something to look out for

Thanks Dearborn. I thought a die crack or chip was considered a die break. I don't know. Either way it's a keeper
