Hello all!

I recently got this Quarter Eagle. I am just curious as to your thoughts on its grade.

Thank you.

I believe it's the Closed 3 variety and hence around 30-40% more scarce than the Open 3.

There isn't much of a price difference in the circulated grades on this, I'd put it somewhere between VF25 and EF45 depending on luster, it looks pretty well circulated but still has nice features. A rather common uncommon coin if that makes much sense. The reverse should have more lines showing full in the shield for a full EF45 but this is gold and they wear much more quickly and uneven than silver coins, so that could be it. It's in the low to mid 500 dollar range now.

I have the obverse at VF35 and the reverse at XF45. i'll net it at XF40

without better photos the coin may have been cleaned or it could be just some dirt around the devices and stars that are looking like that. if it was, it was probably very light and acceptable for a straight grade. just wanted to mention that

Thank you everyone for your opinions!

I was thinking at first it might be a closed 3 as well, but after I took the first photos, I was not sure. Thank you for clarifying.

Here are some additional photos. Hopefully these are more helpful, but to be honest, I am not sure that these are better.

Again, thank you!

reassessment using new photos.

much better but not perfect. originally I had it at XF40
i think the obverse is XF45+ and reverse AU50. I'm betting it looks a little better in hand so I think the reverse will push to AU

XF45 If the coin has luster, it can make AU50.

Again, thank you all for your opinions!

I am by no means an expert on grading (I am just now trying to learn how to grade), but yes, the reverse does look better than the obverse to me. I was looking through Photograde before my original post, and I was guessing anywhere between maybe 35 and 50, but the obverse looking a bit more worn kind of threw me off.

Either way, I am just happy to finally have a quarter eagle in my collection.

I've found whatever grade I assign to gold, in most cases, I need to add one grade level. TPG's are way more lenient with marks/light scratches etc. I'm assuming due to the softness of the metal
