Hi all!

I'm pretty sure I've finally cherrypicked my first legit doubled-die penny from change at a local gas station. Just wanted to post a few images here, since you all responded so quickly, were so helpful, and (up until now, I hope) so thoroughly debunked my wishfull thinking with any previous "I'm pretty sure" find :)

I took my photos with a friend's USB-microscope because my image editing tools are "in the shop" so-to-speak (working on a backup laptop) so I am stuck with the white-balance chosen by the camera at the time of the shot. Here's what I have:

1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101

Here are the photos I got of the indicators listed on Wexlers site:

SW die gouge running across the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY:
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101

SSW die gouge through the upper right of the 9 in 1983:
1983-D-1c-WDDO-001-Fs-01-1983-101

I'm a bit more confident that this is a legitimate doubled-die specimen - the indicators, the doubling, it's hard to miss once you have it "in-scope" :) Nonetheless, I defer to the experts...

So, given my mediocre photography, can anyone confirm that my hunch is correct?

Thanks as always!

-Matt

MattEWI to the CCF!

the header you use is not correct.
you state that it is WDDO-001 (WEXLER) and also FS-101 ( Cherry Pickers' Guide).
WDDO-001 does not cross reference to FS-101.
please change header to read only WDDO-001 from WEXLER and if you would like to add coppercoins variety number it is 1do-005.

when taking pictures, take a full picture of the reverse and obverse. also take close up pictures of the variety. sometimes it maybe necessary to take pictures of the die markers too.

WDDO-001 variety
Quote:
Description: A Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 10:00 shows on the date and the ERTY of LIBERTY.

when taking close up pictures of the date and mintmark, please make it level. on earlier dates, mintmark position in relationship to the date is a key diagnostic.

and DONT take close up pictures where I can see electrons and protons moving around.

something I try to do is... take the same pictures as the ones listed in DOUBLEDDIE.COM, variety vista, or coppercoins.

thanks

1. Looks like DDD is starting to show on your coin (Part of the die aging process) and Machine Doubling is also affecting the devices in the same direction on the date.
2. Not a doubled die. But an aging die with strike issues. Die wear shows on devices towards the closest rims.
3. DDD shows on the fields between the devices and the rim. So on your coin the MD is pushing back on the date, but the motto is showing both. MD and DDD can be in the same direction parts of the coin and different on other parts of the coin.
4. Not a plus for the coin. It was from a regular die that was aging and the MD is shoving all the devices in a single direction. So it is not a doubled die, as the die was not doubled. (just a normal die) Machine Doubling doesn't create a doubled die.
