Welcome to the 5c sub-thread detailing my journey to noodle a full set of circulating Australian decimal coins. First introduced in 1966, the Australian 5 cent coin features an echidna on the reverse.  Key dates for this series are 1972, 2016 change-over and 2019 JC effigy. Most 5 cent noodlers are looking for error coins (e.g die clashes, partial collar errors, broadstrikes). Given the extremely high number of 5 cent coins minted for circulation you are much more likely to find error coins of this denomination than any other. My quest though, is to noodle the 58 different five cent coins issued for circulation. (Including the two 1966 and 1981 coins from different mints) No 5 cent coins were issued for circulation in 1985 and 1986. |

Day 5The first 5 cent noodling session (only 6 rolls) yielded all but 10 coins. Nothing much to say except that I managed to find the 2019 JC coin which is currently the lowest mintage 5 cent coin released into circulation.    Total number of 5 cent coins noodled: 240 Number of coins found: 48 Number of coins still to find: 10

Great group, I love the 5 cent coins, got my Aussie collection started with them. I managed to get 3 of the scarce 1972 coins through my noodling. Just now I have a bag that had 3 x UNC 1998 and 1999 coins.
Managed to get UNC 1966 Canberra and 1979 - 1984 also all UNC.

Two ladies who own a thrift shop get a lot of dead estates, where they clear out all the clutter, its amazing how many people seem to have piles of coins from all over the place.
Plus Australian 1c to 20c circulated here between 1967 and 2006. As I showed in an earlier thread, a noodle I did back in 1992 of 5 cent coins showed around 6% were Australian coins.

Day 13Noodled another 10 rolls today and found 7 of the 10 coins I was looking for. The 1969 and 1970 are in desperate need of upgrading.  Have got the different mint 1966 coins (mint marks are the length of a spine on the reverse)  The 1981 Llantrisant minted 5 cent can not be distinguished from the RAM issue but the Winnipeg mint coin has finer detail on the hair waves at the back of the queen's neck.  Still looking for 1971, 1972 and 2016 change-over. Total number of 5 cent coins noodled: 640 Number of different coins found: 55 Number of coins still to find: 3

Great stuff, love how you found a new way to pick out the Canadian 1981 5 cent coin, now need to go through mine. Knew about the spine on the 1966 coin.
It is a cute design though.
If it helps all of my 1967 to 1977 5 cent coins are pretty worn, mostly VF and Fine.

Day 15Finally got around to breaking open this $100 bundle of 5 cent coins that has been sitting around my house since last year.  30 of the rolls appear to be "uncirculated" 2019 IRB coins. That left me with only 20 rolls to noodle, yielding the 1971 I was still looking for plus some better 1969 and 1970 coins.  At last I found a 2016 change-over 5 cent.  crab eater seems to find a dozen of these a day but over here in South East Queensland they are hard to find.  Only 1 coin left to find, and surprise, surprise, it's the legendary 1972. Total number of 5 cent coins noodled: 1440 Number of different coins found: 57 Number of coins still to find: 1

Not bad results after more than half of this batch were eliminated from the start. |

Day 21Noodled 24 rolls of 5 cent coins (the maximum that the coin machine will spit out in one go). No sign of a 1972. (No more change-overs either) Only finds of interest were these foreign "imposters"   Looks like I forgot to flip the coin with the crab on it. (It is a 1986 5 cent from Malta) That 1999 NZ 5 cent seems to be upset. Do any of our kiwi experts (i.e. Princetane) know if that is common for this year. Total number of 5 cent coins noodled: 2400 Number of different coins found: 57 Number of coins still to find: 1

What........ only 24 rolls,  Westpac graciously puts 100 rolls in the wall for me if I am quick enough to get them all. First in best dressed. Probably get barred soon.  Could be the reason I am finding a lot of 2016 Changeover 5 cents, but I hardly ever find 2019 JC 5 cents? Cool crab coin from Malta, have not come across one of those yet. Edited by crab eater

In what way is that 1999 Kiwi 5 cent an upset coin. Looks fairly typical to me.
It was the first year of the IRB effigy and there is that space to the right of the date. There is also a "wart on nose" variety for that year, but your coin does not look like it there.
The other dates are all common, the 1970 is in decent shape. For our 5 cents, the 1973 is the only fairly scarce date and of course the 2004.
The Maltese coin is cool, I collect stamps and coins of Malta and that coin is the first year of their 2nd coinage, they had values from 1 cent to 1 Maltese Lira. It was a high valued currency, a Maltese lira being worth around 1.55 sterling and at least $5 NZD in 1996. Now its demontised as the Maltese moved to the Euro in 2008.
The earlier Maltese coins of 1972 to 1982 featured aluminium mils coins, these were not used after 1986.
