My 1970-D quarter struck on dime stock weighs 4.2g and is equal in appearance to the OPs coin. I'd say that is the correct call.

@Hoki, by your calculus which it is Euclidian mathematics is correct. Me I calculate according with the molecular chemistry mathematics which use Pythagoras mathematics, and the results are almost same, except Euclidian is abstract and more relative. Differences? not so significative.
PS. the designs and the deepness of the Dies are different, so your result like I say is not far from mine.

It is late, but wait for answers from Europe or China it is this.
We have a confirmation from TB have one like this. I think the gravity test must be perform on this coin. I still say it is a nice find.

Well, since John1 asked, it came with other mostly error coins from a coin dealer who bought them from another coin dealer who suspected it was the quarter struck on a dime stock but strangely the price was really low at $1.50. I told the coin dealer whom I bought it from that it might be that so I then purchased it and confirmed it when I got back home.

Very cool. I think some people were confused and thinking you meant dime plan which would weigh much less. Not the stock though.

Congrats on a great error. Yes, dime thickness stock on a quarter-sized planchet. (I like those calculations hokie fan. It's a great mind-stretching exercise.)

What are the criteria for distinguishing between a rolled thin planchet and a struck on the wrong stock error?
Since the dime and quarter are both clad with the same two layers of material, wouldn't a rolled thin planchet look exactly the same as this quarter? If not, what does one look for to determine the difference between the two errors?

HGK3, I kinda wonder myself on the differences, but I have a feeling that after the fact when they were released for circulation is when the error was discovered, hence a distinguishing feature.
