Circulation hits are common, but the way that this number one has been contorted is unusual. It is probably worth a few times face value.

Agree, the result of taking hits in circulation--not terribly uncommon. Copper is a relatively soft metal and can be be moved/shaped in interesting ways.

If it were from the die, it would be raised and not incuse. Also it is were from the die, where are all the other raised devices that would have been there, making it a double strike. (and on both sides of the coin). It is as mentioned just an altered device from coin contact. (99% of incuse marks added to a coin are post strike damage) Circulation is tough on coins. They are not treated as nicely as possible.
