The 1945 Narrow date Newfoundland 5 cent was identified by Barry Borsellino; his calculations suggest that it is as rare as the 1873H NFLD 5c, making it one of the rarest coins in this list of generally rare coins. One of my goals is to get it listed in the Charlton guide. It's not in the Trends and Coins & Canada - though there are no prices as of yet. Nevertheless, for what it's worth, here it is. Not exactly a gorgeous example but the narrow date is plainly visible. https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coin...ts-1865-1947

I am absolutely sure that 10/10 would choose to own the 1873 H 5 cent over a date spacing variety any day of the week..

@Pacificoin - sure, but the 1945 is relatively unknown and, by and large, the Geo VI 5c are a fairly boring lot. It's all relative...Canadian coins that are similarly rare would be work far more than the NFLD rarities. None of it is entirely logical.

When I started collecting it was in stamps and an old timer told me the only thing rarer than the NFLD mintages was NFLD collectors, my guess it's the same with coins, you need demand

@John100 yes that's probably true! Though there's been some fairly lively trade in NFLD coins this past couple of years.

I thought in the early 2000 or so when the huge offshore oil fields came on stream and Voisey Bay it help turn NFLD into a have province and the locals will buy back their heritage, maybe this trend is starting now, keep collecting !

It is entirely logical . If there is one there are many more of this so-called rarity . All one has to do is figure how many Pieces were struck from this particular die . Willing to bet the number is many thousands . The survival rate is probably quite high due to the rather short period of time these circulated , a matter of just a few years since NF joined Canada in 1949 . There is just not the collector interest in the series to really figure the rarity . Truth is date spacing varieties just don't command huge money .

@Pacificoin - okay, but what is your actual point? I collect these things because I'm interested in them. It doesn't seem wrong to do that nor does it seem wrong to share the information here. The guy who identified this particular oddball, Barry Borsellino, estimates that around 2,000 of them were struck in the first place and that, based on the frequency that the come up on ebay and the like, the number that's still out there is roughly the same as the 1873H. He may be off by some degree - who knows? But it is definitely hard to find this coin - I know because I've tried and after several years have managed to find two [the same number as I have of the 1873H 5c]. I don't expect to retire from the proceeds of either of them. For the record, what I like most about it is that it's visible to the naked eye. That is in very marked contrast to the numerous variations of the 1859 Canada 1c and many other highly collectable coins.

Quote: The survival rate is probably quite high due to the rather short period of time these circulated , a matter of just a few years since NF joined Canada in 1949 Around 6 years ago or so, had a bag of several thousand Newfie 5 and 10 Cents walk into a coin show I was set up at, all 1938-1947. Bought them at melt, wholesaled out a couple of thousand, sold a couple thousand online and send a couple thousand out to melt when silver spiked a couple of years ago. I would imagine there would be many such hoards out there given how briefly these pieces were in circulation Not a varieties guy at all, but certainly a neat discovery for those who do varieties

I am always skeptical about surveys from e-Bay. They can be a start, but IMO they are anything but random, which detracts from any probability estimates made from them.
