I recently bought this Alexander the Great Tetradrachm off a local dealer of mine and I'm not sure if I still want to keep it or not.

First of all this coin looked absolutely stunning when I saw it and I knew that I wanted it when I first saw it (WOW).

But after examining this coin in person for a while after I bought it, I realized that the edge filing was alot worse then what was originally shown in the photos.

The entire edge all the way around the coin has been perfectly squared off possibly with a modern angle grinder of some sorts. This coin at one point was used probably in a jewelry piece of some sorts where it must of had to fit perfectly round inside of a bezel and made into a necklace.

Im just making this post knowing whether or not this kind of thing is common in the market or not and if collectors would really call this kind of thing a dealbreaker or not if they where interested in the coin.

When I first saw the coin listed, it had 16 watchers on ebay. (16 WATCHERS!!!!) And I had an urge to snag it as soon as I possibly could.

Now that I'm reconsidering my purchase and wondering if I should go and get my money back or not, I fear that If I do actually return the coin that the dealer would turn right back around and sell it to someone who will happily pay their full asking price for it even with how bad the edge filing is. (

Sorry for the lack of photos of the edges but it's the best I have at the moment. (I PAID $350 FOR IT)

I like how the "edge filling" comment on the slab is in such tiny letters. I can't say whether you should return it or not but it is hard to believe that a coin in that shape can even exist, given its age.

There is nothing illicit going on here, so why shouldn't they resell it? The edge filing is stated on the NGC label. (Although, indeed, in tiny font size.) No subterfuge here. A legit ancient coin, with acknowledged filing.

Personally, I don't consider the seller's images to be deceitful in any way. Additionally, given the perfect roundness of the coin, the squared off edge would/should be expected, IMO. It (the edge) would be very challenging or impossible to photograph in the slab, in any event.

Amazing obverse, BTW.

Return it if you can - you're not happy with it. But it is NGC certified and the edge filing is mentioned, so it's not really the seller's fault. It's not as if they can show or hide the edge when it's entombed.

In my opinion the seller should feel no obligation to take it back.
Isn't that what slabbing is all about?

As mentioned before, stunning coin given its age.

It all boils down to whether the edge filing makes you unhappy. If it does, return it. It's your collection, enjoy it don't regret it.

It's a beautiful coin. A little bit of edge filing would not be a deal breaker for me. I'd be celebrating the aquisition.

Here's a side pic so there's a better understanding of what I'm talking about.
(It continues all the way around the edge of the entire coin)

I would return it. One of the problems with NGC Ancients is that coins with serious problems still "straight grade". Shady ebay sellers take full advantage.
