Think of:
Monroe Doctrine
Napoleon III
Cinco de Mayo

When the US was preoccupied with the Civil War, Napoleon III tried to set up as Emperor of Mexico an Austrian nobleman named Maximillian. He did get control of half of Mexico, but not all. Cinco de Mayo celebrates a battle that the resistance won. In the hinterlands still controlled by the republic a mint was set up in Real de Catorce and operated a few years. Mintmark CE (the E being placed in the position of an exponent sign). When the American civil war ended, Napoleon III decided it was a good time to pull the plug on his adventure. Maximillian stayed, and was put in front of a firing squad.

Here is a coin made there. While in so-so condition, there are so few of these coins that it is still rather valuable.

Very nice, I always appreciate the Mexican coinage from the early colonial US era as more of them circulated here than just about anything else.
