I sent this before but now I am concerned that the dings near the 8 and S mintmark could detail the coin. Let me know your opinion on the grade and these dings. thx

tough call on details. for me I think it has a good chance at a straight grade however for a mid AU coin the fields are lifeless and void of any remaining luster. I do think the coin could details due to a cleaning. as always we can only assess based on the photos

Agree, close call. Guessing AU-55 straight.

At first look I was at AU53/55, but the close up photo on the S with the accumulation of the hit on the 8 puts me at AU Details displaced metal.

Surfaces don't look original to me, could be a bigger concern than the scratches in question. I'm also at AU Details

I'm at AU Details, 98 code (Damage). The minor dings and scratches aren't a concern. The rim is flattened in the date and top of wreath area, and it looks like someone tried to punch a hole between the "8" and "6" of the date. The 1869-S is a common enough date that better examples are out there. Dimes usually get a bit of grace because of their size, but this damage seems intentional, and that's a tough sell with any TPG.

Seems like the term "prime focal area" isn't discussed much anymore but the date is one such area. Damage to the date should weigh heavily in a TPG decision to "detail" a coin. Lack of visible luster is also a potential problem, as mentioned. AU detail.
