Has anyone seen anything like this? The large hole goes completely through the coin. Is it something that could happen at the mint or was it made environmentally or some other way?

Looks to be a drilled hole. Typically those are near the edge so you can hang the coin though.

Has to be damage.

Could be a kid was trying to drill George's eye and the bit wandered a little.

That's what I thought, but the way the metal is deposited up around the hole is unusual, like it was molten or something. I figured it might be electrical somehow.

Wow. That hole is super small. Can't be any more than about .015" diameter. Doubt it was a drill. A drill that small would have snapped that close to George's throat. I'm thinking EDM'ed.

@Make, I have drill bits at 0.01mm. Probably an goldsmith drilling over soldering flame.
