I used to stare at scratches on coins, but now I feel like I can graduate to being a doubled die hunter. And after a few hours of researching what they should look like, and being fooled many times, I think I finally found one. At least I think so. I've only been looking for these for about a week now, pretty new to the hobby, and haven't seen something like this in person.
You can see the doubling in the bottom left corner, the tops of the pillars, almost everywhere. And what's interesting is it looks like there's a fire raging to the right of Ol Abe!
I definitely want opinions on this and fingers crossed that it is what I think it is. Taking photos of a penny proved more difficult than I thought with the limited tools I have. Lighting is harder to get right on it than other coin, but hope they are still good enough to see.
Note the lines behind the bays and fields. Those are die polishing scratches. These scratches flatten quicker on of the open fields. On the areas next to devices and design, they last a bit longer. But inside of the bays and insides of devices, these die scratches last the longest. Not it is not a doubled die. On the early 1990's cents you can see DDR's on the bays: 1994 Memorial reverse DDR: 1995 had a few in different locations on the DDR listed ones: http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20...R%201995.htm But note on the 1996-D DDR: http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20...201996-D.htm Note the new DDR locations on these. I think this is when Denver started with the Single squeeze dies? Then following years had the DDR's on these locations on the centers of the design on the bays. But on your coin it is just die scratches. Looks like the reverse die was worked over a lot to remove die clashes at that time.
