Helloooo again...this penny is no looker and probably hung around a parking lot for a while but there are what looks to be a clipped planchet here. But I'm not so sure. I would really like to know if it could be a clipped planchet and because the zinc is exposed when this happens the zinc rot begins as expected and the edges of the clipped section become somewhat jagged and rough. I guess the question is, can a coin start out a clipped planchet and because of zinc rot, it would just look like zinc rot. I ask only because I have recently ran into several clipped planchet LOOking coins that had a very simmetrical clipped planchet LOOking shape to them. I hope ya'll understand what I'm trying to ask. Thank you for everyone's help on this lovely forum and for putting up with me...

Not a clipped planchet, PMD
A clipped planchet would not have the zinc core exposed, it would be copper.

I am now confused...Are you saying a clipped planchet can only be on a copper coin?

Given the somewhat ragged edges of the two features--not nicely curved (as 'clean' arcs)--I don't believe these are classic planchet clips. Not seeing evidence of the Blakesley effect either.

Intentional "clip" PMD.
On a copper plated cent,a clip would be plated over with copper.

Sure, but there might be other clues such as the Blakesley Effect that would point to the planchet having been clipped to start with. In the particular case of this coin though, it is pretty clear that neither of these clips occurred prior to the coin being struck.

Maybe I should have been a little more specific.
The coins are made from a zinc core. These cores are then plated with copper to make
the blanks which make the planchets for striking the coins. If the blanks had an incomplete planchet,
the edges would be copper plated along with the rest of the blank.

If it were were a legit clip, the edge would be copper plated. Your is not, so it is just coin damage:

Note the edge where the planchet was over the edge of the metal is plated.

On the fake ones, there is no plating there. (Like your coin is missing and the size are not correct either)

Thank you everyone for your chime in. I have been educated here. I thought the clipping would happen after the plating. Thank you again. I love learning this stuff.
