1984 (D?) Penny - Strange Mint Mark, Possible Double Die?

Hello.

I was looking at this penny because where the mint mark is supposed to be looked strange. Looks like it was applied and chipped off so not sure what the issue is. But looking at it a bit further, the 8 in the date looked a bit fat to me.

I'm eager to hear feedback on what the issue could be with the mint mark and if it is a double die penny. Thanks all

iIthas probably taken a hit producing that mark, it doesn't look like there was a mm there.
The 8 looks like Machine Doubling.

Oh you might be right. The power of angles lol, still need a lot more practice with this hobby. That just looks like damage there.

As already stated, zinc rot or zinc deterioration. There is no mint mark.

If it were a mintmark, it would be raised from the surface, not level with the fields. Philadelphia cents only a 'P' on them one year, and it wasn't this one.
