Hi all,
I was just checking to see if this was an error or PMD before throwing it back into circulation.

Looks like it was toasted with a cigarette lighter. Spender. Zinc exposed, and will rot in the oxygen of the air.

This is not heated with a lighter. They must have had problems in the electroplating in 95. I found these and several more in string wrapped rolls of unc 95s. The only answer anyone has given is heat, or PMD. I know it's not because I pulled them out of the new rolls myself. https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...fopt--2-.jpg

Somehow this appearance is generated after the strike. It is distinct from unimpeachable partial plating errors. You can also see tiny bumps on the surface of the OP's coin, which is a red flag.

Very nice find. Thanks for the clarification Cujohn and the additional references.

Mike, Are you saying that this particular coin is a fake?

I've found a bunch of these as well. Mostly 93,95 and 96. As mentioned earlier mine were uncirculated coins. The op's coin has changed color over time. When the coin is fresh it has a more green tint. Possibly something on the die that reacted with the plan.
Or rapid oxidation? I'm no expert but these did leave the mint this way.

As far as being fake, I can't prove it. But their appearance is incompatible with a partially plated planchet. Something else is going on. The presence of bumps on at least some of these specimens is troubling, as is the consistently centralized and bifacial positioning of the zinc-colored area. Also troubling is the sheer abundance of coins with this appearance, their consistently dull luster, and the dark gray color of the zinc-colored metal. Some of these coins show what initially appears to be split plating on the lateral side of peripheral numbers and letters. That would ordinarily be a sign of authenticity. But a closer look shows that the copper simply disappeared, as if it was chemically dissolved.

Willburton, like yours mine was found in unc rolls. I too think they came from the mint this way. And I have found other dates also. I Think it has to do with the cleaning of the planchets, between punching them out to electroplating. Maybe they go through a rinse and don't get cleaned enough.
