Small size FRN's are maybe a bit boring compared to a lot of other U.S. currency issues, but I find the evolution of the notes somewhat fascinating.

I base my U.S. currency type sets on the Friedberg design numbers, but I often add additional notes when I feel there is enough difference to warrant an extra example.

I have all the Friedberg design numbers for the $100 FRN's, and have just added my first "extra", a different series year for design #230. Here is what I have so far...

Friedberg Design #229: "Redeemable in gold" obligation, numeric district

Design #230: "Redeemable in gold" obligation, alpha district, series 1928A
Small-Size-$100-Federal-Reserve-Notes
Design #230: Same as above, series 1934
Small-Size-$100-Federal-Reserve-Notes
Design #231: "Legal Tender, Redeemable in lawful money" obligation
Small-Size-$100-Federal-Reserve-Notes
Design #231-A: "Legal tender" obligation
Small-Size-$100-Federal-Reserve-Notes
Design #231-B: Design change

Design #231-C: Design change

@hokie

These are beautiful! The federal reserve notes are one of the few notes I don't collect (I only have the Gold clause and no gold clause) but your set makes getting that series tempting!

Thanks, all!

@hfjacinto, I started out doing only the 1950 and earlier notes, but as you know I'm weak...

Excellent progression set of $100 FRNs hokiefan.

Personally, I love $100 notes. I was lucky enough to find an invitation to the unveiling ceremony held in September 1995 for the newly redesigned 1996 $100 FRN. This was the first series with the new Big Portrait for the $100 note, replacing the previous design used for almost 70 years.

Thanks, again.

Steve, that's a very interesting invitation! I like that the preview was to be held in "The Cash Room"...

The Cash Room opened in 1869 as the Bankers Bank. It accommodated transactions for gold, silver and paper money. Services were also available to the public like cashing government checks, exchanging old money for new and redeeming gold and silver certificates. The Cash Room was closed in 1976 and was completely renovated in 1985.
