#1., There is no such thing as a "finished set". Now that my 1909-2022 Lincoln set is "finished", I've moved on to a "US" type set......right !!!! Well some of those AU/Uncirculated Bn/RB Lincolns don't look so satisfying anymore. I guess the "finishing" will continue into perpetuity.

Depends on what the initial goal is to define "finished". There is infinite upgrading and adding you can do, so if you have no goal, you will never be finished. Once all of your Lincoln cents are RD, start collecting by die varieties!
Have fun with the type set!

I have plenty of finished sets. They are done. The albums are complete. I have no desire to upgrade anything in them. However, the coin collection as a whole is perpetually unfinished. Several sets left to complete, new sets being added, etc. I hope to never finish my coin collection.

Well there is always more coins you can pick up, and your collection can expand forever. That's the joy of collecting, you can do what you like!

I've completed a few sets that I have no desire to upgrade, others like LWC if I can find a nice coin I buy it.

Some of the sets I collect I'll never finish because I keep adding to them (my U.S. "type" set keeps expanding as I add additional minor sub-types, different varieties, different mint marks, proof examples, etc., plus the occasional upgrade). Similar for my U.S. and Confederate currency type sets. My set of silver classic commemoratives is complete but I will never in my lifetime run out of opportunities for doing upgrades.
I got bored with modern series like the modern clad, silver and gold commemoratives because once you have all MS/PR70 examples, there's no room to grow other than adding the occasional new examples that are issued. Or maybe finding one of the handful of proof-like MS70 examples that have been graded. I love the coins, but miss the "thrill of the hunt"...

What are these "Sets" I keep hearing people speak about "finishing"? On a somewhat more serious note, there should be a technical definition between "completing" and "upgrading". If each component of the set is present, then the set can logically be considered "complete". Upgrading items within the set for similar items in better condition (or with better toning, or any other criterion of "better" you might choose) does not make the set "more complete" than it already is, it merely improves the quality of the completed set. You are still "collecting coins", but you are no longer "completing the set". It's also important to consider that the definition of a "set" is entirely up to you, the collector. If you want to align your personal definition with the definition used by one of the companies that make the albums people use to house their "sets", then this, too, is entirely optional and voluntary. For example, the OP seems to have unilaterally decided that the "Lincoln set" ends in 2022. To my knowledge, the issuing of Lincoln cents will continue for at least the next few years; it would seem logical to me that a "complete Lincoln set" cannot be fully completed until they stop making them. But, that's just my own, personal, literalist definition. There aren't "right" and "wrong" ways to collect, just "popular" and "unpopular" ways.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

You missed my point completely, just go back and re-read the very first sentence in the OP. My point was/is, just because all the dates and MM in a particular series is complete, the quest is never over. I am continuously going back and forth from "set to set" upgrading. Hence, for me there is no such thing as a finished set.

My wife always asks if I am finished with those coins. My answer is, when I am dead. As long as the US and Canada keep on producing coins, sets will be added to.

I will never finish collecting coins till the day I die. Once you are bitten, you will never stop looking and being amazed. This is what we live for,at least me. Nothing satisfy s me more than sitting at my desk covered in coins. I just love collecting that much.

My 'sets' or albums are never finished. I have even gone so far as to add more pages to my Dansco albums to include varieties, special minted coins (such as all the 'S' minted Business quarters, W coins, and such. Am I finished? NEVER! as long as I'm alive.

Agee with @Sap. There is a difference between completing and upgrading. But the beauty of coin collecting is that it's different for everyone. Some are happy to never upgrade, and others make it their top priority. Some collect proofs, others don't. The beauty and joy is you can make it whatever you want, anytime you want, for whatever reason makes you happy.
Having said that, no matter how much I tell myself I don't care about the varieties/errors, there's just no way I can leave that one pesky hole empty in my album and still convince myself the set is "finished." Haha.

An example is my Benji half dollar set. I have uncirculated versions of all of them and I am missing the first three proofs. But Lord knows they could be upgraded or added to. None of them are graded. Didn't pay attention to FBL. All proofs are not cameo. Don't have all error varieties. Just those four things alone would take me thousands of dollars and many years to complete. I don't think I'll pursue it except maybe getting the first three proofs and perhaps getting some more errors. Love those half dollars. Also love Peace dollars.
