I've come across a few thousand of these early cents (worn and 'light') over several decades of collecting/searching. Highly likely this coin began life at the lower end of the Weight Tolerance limit, and circulation wear has reduced it further. Just my opinion. Report this Post to the Staff

Weighing 2.83 grams with that level of wear is completely normal. About a 5% loss from the mint's minimum tolerance. 9% below nominal. ANA #R3154474 Report this Post to the Staff
