I was going to write this off as PMD but I noticed the features, especially on the reverse, don't seem to be impacted by the damage. I figure if it was dragged across something to cause gauges the lettering would be destroyed. So, I don't know if this is a mint error or PMD.

Definitely some kind of environmental damage, possibly buried in acidic soil. It could be a woody but with the shape it's in I'd call it a spender.

Weight? Looks like acidic damage which should make it weigh less than normal.

@change, as this isn't a 1974 cent, I'm going to fix the title for you.

I'm thinking woody characteristics emphasized through exposure to a rather harsh, corrosive environment (such as being buried).

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the input. Still learning the ropes here. And sorry about the wrong date. Apparently my brain didn't want to cooperate with me. Lol.
