Crazy die breakdown on this 2021 dime in BU condtion.
Check out the die cracks and chips on Roosevelt's jaw and crack on the nose, eye cracks and chip in the eyebrow, and cracks and chips in the hair. I've found several other similar dimes from the same dime roll from a local bank, all in BU condition, which have similar die breakdown like what is seen on this one.

I agree. For whatever reason, these dimes seem to have more die chips and cracks than some other denominations. Maybe the smaller dies mean more concentrated stresses.

I have about 40 of these right now. Some also have major chips on the reverse torch.

Seems to be very common on modern dimes

If the dies were not tempered correctly, they can be brittle and have issues.

Thanks for information, Coop. Very interesting.
Has this failure to temper a die properly been cited for any other die failures in coins you can mention? Is it something that been documented in any coin related book or magazine, or by the Mint?

Well the quenching at the wrong time when the blue temper line is move over that area, and not quenched exactly then, will be too soft if missed. Or too brittle if done too soon. The 1973 reverse dies also had an issue like this, but in a different manner:

But with so many dies having the slight chipping, this may be the cause. These need to be done at a specif time to get it exactly right. More of one at a time, but they may have tried lumping it into a gang effort to make them quenched, without one at a time? (That is what I think happens when they have a bunch of these to temper)

So, a follow-up question.
With such poor dies occurring because of this quenching/tempering problem, would you expect to see an increase in instances of shattered dies in these dimes?

Depends on how brittle they are. IF mild they will have a mild number of Die chips. Different die events can damage a die quicker/slower. Depending on the event. Feeder Finger Damage can vary. From light die gouges/scratches to not being able to refresh/rescue the dies that ruin the dies. Just like cars, different things can alter the die in different ways. (We have to figure out what happened. They just fix the issue. sometimes removing too much design:

Mild:

Heavier damage:

They try to rescue them, sometimes they have to chuck the die away, retiring that die.

CoopHome: Does the Mint try to rescue damaged dies?Yes.
