http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...6WideAM.htmlBoy, I can hardly keep up. It is not just Jefferson providing good, wholesome entertainment.I just wonder how many I have had my hands on and discarded. I always look at the date first, if it was a 1996, I would never have wasted more time looking at the reverse. This is the reason why I don't get rid of cents and nickels anymore. Whenever I've dumped them in the past I'll read about a new variety being discovered the next day. At least now I'll be able to go to the cabinet, yank out the 1996 US cent drawer and get down to business.

Best thing is to be sure to check EVERYTHING. No telling what you could discover.

Look at everything , as Chuck said. After all, until about a year and a half ago there was no reason to look at the back of the 1982's.

Yep, that is a small date zinc- Ziggy9 was the discoverer of this major DDR about 1 1/2 years ago and only one other has been found since.

It's been hard to find any small date 1982's. Found a few Philly copper's, but most are Denver zinc.

That depends on where you live. If you live in the Denver mint district, you are much more likely to find Denver minted coins, and the opposite for those living in the East. the dividing line runs roughly through Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida. Anything west of there is likely to see much more Denver mint coins, anything east is likely to see much more Philadelphia mint coins.
Additionally, this doubled die was found on the hardest type of 1982 cent to find. The small date cents are only roughly a third of the overall production, and the zinc cent was less than half of the small date production. That coupled with the fact that the early zinc cents attritioned out of change faster than their copper counterparts, and you already have a tough coin to find. Finding one of them with the doubled die is going to be next to impossible. There are likely some of them out there, but in a year and a half I know of two examples...nothing like the 1995 doubled die in which there were hundreds known a few months after its discovery.

To get back on track a little, the 1996 Wide AM reverse cent is a new discovery, which begs to argue it's not common at all. 12 years to discover something like that is a long time sleeping. The two things that the 1996 cent have going for it that the 1982 cents don't are that there's only one type of 1996 Philly cent - there were four types of 1982 Philly cents. Also, the 1996 cents didn't have a very short shelf life due to copper plating problems like the 1982 cents. With all this to wit I would say that a vast number (over 3/4) of the 1982 DDR cents minted are already gone through rot, normal attrition, and other factors. I would say that well over half of the 1996 Wide AM cents minted probably still exist because the coin is 14 years newer and didn't have immense copper plating problems that rotted the 1982 coins away.

atlas580 me too, it's not for lack of trying. Would someone be so kind as to post a listing of the close and Wide AM years with respect to proof and business strike. There was one in a thread recently, I can't find it now. Thanks Tom
