hewart Valued Member United States 157 Posts	Posted 05/27/2022 2:44 pm I think I got some good shots of what I think is Machine Doubling called Push. This is where the die gets a bounce and does a second strike causing a ghost pattern around the edge of a letter which resembles a double strike. This one is a bit different in that instead of just a shelf image, it has a grove. This is the same dime I showed with the crack in the die. It also shows some scratches on the reverse and may not be related. Oddly enough a similar pattern on the obverse letter R in liberty has damage as well. I'm not sure if the crack in the reverse die played a part in any of this or not. Let me know what you think. Report this Post to the Staff

HGK3 Pillar of the Community United States 573 Posts	Posted 05/27/2022 5:30 pm When the die strikes the planchet the forces created by the impact are transferred laterally across the face of the die from the center toward the rim. This results in a tiny bit of deterioration of the die with every strike, but always deforming from the center of the die toward the rim. Any time you look at a coin and see consistent deformation of the devices in that direction Die Deterioration Doubling should always be your first suspect. On pictures 3 and 4 I can see radial flow lines developing which are caused by DDD. Notice how the tops of the letters (at the rim) and the bottoms of the letters (towards the center) are raised slightly higher than the center of the letters, particularly one ONE DIME, for instance? The letters are slowly getting smushed on the die by the repeated strikes outwards towards the rim, causing this distortion on the finished coin after striking. Report this Post to the Staff
