1913 Lincoln Wheat cent minted in Philadelphia. Coins from this year were typically well struck on both sides, while this example clearly was not. Weight is 2.9g. Normally, I would figure it just has had a really busy time out in circulation, and maybe it lost a little weight trying to fit in with the more modern cents. Then I noticed the marks on the edge that look like it was a reeded coin or at least planchet at some point? So I can only come up with 2 ideas based on what I see. Post mint damage to a way over circulated coin, or possibly struck on a foreign coin or planchet. Diameter and width are both normal. Photos attached, any input would be appreciated.

I would say that the 'reeding' is not mint generated (for obvious reasons - cents are not a reeded coin, but that said - the 'reed' marks are not regularly spaced out, they are random. I think either a lot of contact marks or someone long ago hit the coin to add these.
As for the weight, it is within tolerances. copper cent coin goal weight is 3.11g tolerance is +- .12g 'out the door' as they say.
Seeing how worn this coin is, It can account for the weight loss, especially if it was light to start with.

That is basically where my head is at on this too, trying to check some other edge marks also, but don't have good enough magnification. Thanks Dearborn

Note they are not equal spaced, like reed would have been. Just a damaged coin that someone who had too much time on their hands altered. Maybe Bert?

larame, to the CCF Not odd at all. Circulation can take its toll on a coin that probably circulated for 60 or 70 years.

Has it occurred to you that the OPs scale may only measure out to the tenth of a gram and not to the hundredth that we like to see?
