Hello,

I saw this coin today and, owning a few real specimens, recognize something is wrong. It doesn't feel right, but weighs in at 24.17 (close enough), diameter is right, and edge lettering is very well done; however, the legends look bubbly and the coin doesn't ping (these monetary union 25 g coins usually ping as authentic Morgans on my app).

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Larger and sharper pics would help, including a close-up of the "bubbly" area.

I don't know how I did this but I completely deleted these off my phone earlier and didn't buy the coin.... Yes... The color is terrible but another thread said that could happen of the coin has been buried... Maybe these are better.
To me, the 1869 is soft. I just don't think it looks right. Much like the dates on many fake Morgans I've seen.

After collecting coins for a while, I've decided to use this approach:
If visually the coin looks off or if you are unsure, avoid it ... unless it's really cheap then why not take the chance right.
Might not be the most scientific approach but that's the best I have right now.

@Numister, I have only been into coins for about a year and have only bought one coin (posted under another thread) because I violated this logic. It was an $18 mistake and another collector bought it for $8 as a fake...

I did not buy this coin and would not unless my tests proved it an authentic example; I am curious though...a contemporary fake would be interesting. I'm just looking for some more information. I am 100% sure the coin is a not a silver 5 Franc.

Your coin looks similar to fake I have from Bolivia.
Mine has dark copper exposed where silvering has worn off.

Especially when the silver colour has mostly gone from the high areas.

@albert does your Bolivia coin have edge lettering? The edge lettering on the Belgian fake I posted is deceptively good... I have seen a few of these monetary union fakes and they often mess up the edge lettering...

I don't think there is any dispute these are fake...just figuring out what they are...

I didn't make any notes about the Bolivia edge so I presume no letttering.
I did note it had wrong alignment front to back.
Here's one more example of exposed copper.

The metal here belies the piece's true nature.

MANY MANY contemporary counterfeits of French 5 Francs of the mid-1800s period... and you certainly do see some of the equivalent Belgian coin as well. There are also, of course, many CC Spanish 5 Pesetas and even some Italian 5 Lire.
