Hey fellas! What a I looking at here? The roof looks post Civil War! The 4th image of shiny coin is for reference, it's not the coin in question.

@dan, when you say "post Civil War", do you just mean covered in circulation scratches and wear or something else like an apparent design change? I just need a little clarity on your question. Thx.

@spence maybe the pic isn't clear enough, & the Civil War reference was to the condition of Monticello maybe getting bombed in the Civil War. My feeble attempt at humor. If this coin hadn't been hidden in the back of a closet since I built this house in 2009 I'd agree, & I see what you're saying the pictures aren't doing it justice. Because there's definitely something wrong with the entire roof line. If it were scratches, you'd only notice it at the point where the scratch crosses the roofline. This looks like they tried to stamp it again. I'm enclosing a pic, the top left arrow is pointing to a diagonal mark, that follows existing roofline, that even carry's over the peak & down the other side. Also If you look to either side of the peak, at the bannister you can notice it looks like the bannister melted together, which coulda happened if it took an extra blow from the die, correct? At the bottom of the both main pillar is gouged as well. I know looking at it through this jewelers loupe you can prominently see an extra hit from the die that starts to fade at the peak, & even more so down the right side. I'm sure you know far more than me, & I knoW you're a better photographer I just wish you could see what I'm seeing. I'm going to have to take a photography class I guess! I've used natural light, electric light, flash, flash with natural light, flash with electric light, no flash, etc.etc. Every postable pic I've used a different method so I just do them all again, at each post.

I'm thinking we're looking at an untidy mix of post-strike circulation dings, hits, and rubs.

I think that Ijn is correct. You may be 'seeing' too much and letting your eyes connect the dots. This coin looks like a very circulated nickel to me.
