Hello all,

Let me start by saying I am a fairly novice coin collector, and would love to learn more about this Buffalo nickel. It's an error coin, and at risk of sounding like an idiot, what would you call this error exactly? Is it a common error? Rare? I actually almost missed it as it was in a lot with a bunch of jewelry, and also an early Hobo nickel, from an estate collection. The condition doesn't seem the greatest but I can't seem to find another like it. Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Eric

First of all it is not an error, it is damage.
It was in a bezel and gold plated for some sort of jewellery

made from two coins? magician coin?

looks like the inside obverse had spun almost 180 degrees... LIBERTY on the inside is not aligning with liberty on the rim.

Agreed with the upthread. Former jewelry piece, just damage. Keep looking though, there are plenty of errors/varieties in this series.

Rest in Peace

Aha, okay makes a lot of sense! I just thought it may have been something because there was only two Buffalo nickels in the jewelry lot and the other one was a hobo nickel, but thank you all very much for the help! I truly appreciate it.

My thought as well - the obverse might pop out. Like @levelsofmadnes, I see the top of Liberty misaligned in the rim portion near the date.

I was thinking damage by a bezel as well but why are the buffalo's head and the F & S of FIVE CENTS not affected?

The obverse looks like damage (it might have been struck by the end of a piece of tubing).
