Curious thing happened tonight - I got a email from PMG requesting transfer of a note in a PMG registry set I have. I only bought the note a few weeks ago, and double checked that I'd entered the holder number correctly. I had, so I rejected the transfer.
Or course, I imagine it's tough to make a typo and actually get a correct holder number for a very specific type of note (in this case, for a third-issue 50 cent fractional note).
I've had NGC registry sets for coins for many years and have never had this happen. Since this note was recently on a dealer's website with the full holder imaged, it got me thinking that maybe someone is building a "fake" registry set. However, does that kind of thing actually happen? Seems a bit far-fetched, but even at my age I'm still constantly surprised at the things some people do.

I suppose someone could be building a fake registry set.
That plan would rely on people acquiring certified items and themselves not participating in the register set process so that the cert could be available to usurp by someone else who became aware of the specific item/cert combination.
Why bother?

Oh, I also have a story similar to this one. I bought a 50 cent carver-washington coin and after I had the coin, I added it to my PCGS coin set, but I was informed that the coin was in the register of another participant. I wrote to the seller from whom I purchased the coin, he told me that he had never used PCGS Set inventory. I still sent an email to the participant who has this coin with a request for deletion.
I still think that the person who has this coin listed in the inventory does not own it for a long time, but has not deleted it.

Let PCGS know, Slerk, and they'll take care of it. It may take a bit of time, but they'll take care of all the communications and any conflict resolution.

I've had this happen with some IHC. But never with notes. Looking at some of the registry sets with 0 pictures, I wouldn't be surprised if a few are fake.

This is the first I have heard of something like this going on. Now I'm wondering if it is even worth building a registry set at all

Quote: This is the first I have heard of something like this going on. Now I'm wondering if it is even worth building a registry set at all While I like the registry sets for the listing of coins and as a storage location, the way the grading/ranks are structured they are basically designed for one to buy the highest grade which results in the highest point and highest rank. And while there are a few coins that have crazy points and are low cost like proof coins in the 7070, the premise is that you have a higher grade/higher cost coin. What that means is that for someone like me, I'll never be in the top 10 of the collections, but I'm fine with that as I collect for me and not the accolades that come with a high ranking. That's not to say that I don't appreciate high ranking coins, I love looking at all the beautiful coins. In the end you have to ask yourself are you doing the registry for the ranking or because of some other aspect. Both are good reasons but if it's the ranking be prepared for deep pockets and lighter wallet.

@Dearborn, as mentioned, this is the first time something like that happened after years of having registry sets. I'm trying to think of some way this could have been just an accident or a mistake; maybe he sold the note and forgot when he was adding stuff to his registry. Who knows, but I'll try and give him the benefit of the doubt. Unless it happens again...
Personally, I enjoy having the registry sets. It gives me some additional motivation (not that I need a lot of that!), as well as the opportunity to be able to admire the sets of others who have a common collecting interest as I do.
For coins, I stick with the NGC registry as they allow both NGC and PCGS coins; I don't restrict myself to one company for certification, so this makes sense for me.

@hfjacinto, I sometimes get a little aggravated at that registry points system of "higher grade => higher points" within a type or category. For example, in my U.S. type set that then means that my highest points coin for the 1909-1958 LWC is a common 1945-S in MS67RD at 774 point, while my 1955 DDO in MS62BN CAC gets a whopping 6 points! Of course, this registry points system has led to the crazy prices we see for "grade rarities" on even modern issues. The sets I'm building are not to get the highest registry ranking. I'm working towards building sets based upon fairly-well defined goals and targets I've set for myself, and the registry stuff is just a side-interest.

For me, a set of registries is a clear structure that gives me a visual idea of what coins I need, what I already have, an estimate of the value of my collection (it's growing, guys, it's growing). The ability to create allows you to choose which set I want to run now and which sets exist. I like a clear structure. I am a person who has absolutely no imagination, I need systematization and clarity.

Call me pessimistic, but I view both coin and paper money registry participation as a loyalty scam introduced by the sales department.

That is something I did not know - I joined PCGS a few years back. Quote: Yesterday they did add a coin to my inventory. Here I won. Well that is great news. Congrats. I have a tendency to agree with you, but I will still continue to get all my proof ASE/AGE's graded, After that, I only buy graded coins to ensure that they are a valid coin/note.

Quote: Call me pessimistic, but I view both coin and paper money registry participation as a loyalty scam introduced by the sales department. For the PCGS and PMG registries, I agree. I buy the coin (or note) on the merits of the piece itself, and not because it's in a specific holder. Thus, I had my first registry sets with NGC many years ago because they also accepted PCGS-holdered coins. However, when they (like PCGS) decided to allow only coins in their own holders for their registries, I deleted them all. Then, a few years ago NGC switched course and again started accepting coins with PCGS holders, so I created a few sets again. If NGC at some point again decides to accept only their own coins, I'll delete my sets again .
