my first thought was this coin is a fake / counterfeit.

Edit - after checking the mintage's I am positive it is a counterfeit
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

Definitely counterfeit. The size and shape of the date is completely wrong. If it will cost you money to send it in for authentication, save yourself some money.
