It's actually a really clean coin. It's just dark, and the words aren't normal at all.

May have been exposed to a corrosive environment many years ago, coupled with an attempt at cleaning--again, long ago.

Perhaps the reverse was treated with acid at some point.

I'll put it under the scope. It's not acid.

I'd say this is a stained nickel that was initially struck with LDS-VLDS deteriorated dies, which is common on 1955 nickels.

VLDS, there are MS 1955 nickels that look similar, they ran the dies way too long that year

I agree with VLDS die state. Nothing for a plus for the coin.

Could it be possible that it's a improperly annealed planchet?

No. Just a extremely worn die and possible outdoor exposure. They turn brown in color, and when all the coating is removed from the coin (during this time the brown tuns black in color), then they look dull for years. Just like this coin.

I have coins just like that and it's not the same, actually I'm positive it's not that.

You don't like our assessment, so why bother asking us about it? You have many years of very wise advice you just dismissed.
