For some time the United States Mint has generally only struck half dollars and dollars in January since none are ordered by the Federal Reserve. However, this year an additional 3.6 million halves were struck in May, as was the case last year for the first five months and again in August. There have been confirmed reports of 2021 Kennedy halves being found at banks in rolls, which indicates the Fed is ordering. So this appears true in 2022. As for your figure, the 6.8 million would include those struck last month (1,800,000 at both facilities). I found these facts at Coin News.

Darnit, they friggin did it at the mint again. I thought and was hoping they wouldn't. You guys were right.

There apparently is a need for Kennedy half dollars, as the Federal Reserve has placed orders for millions of circulation quality coins for release into commerce channels in 2022.

U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White informed Coin World July 1 that the bureau to date had shipped 5.2 million circulation quality Kennedy half dollars to the Federal Reserve — 3 million from the Denver Mint production and 2.2 million from the Philadelphia Mint.

Another 3.08 million coins — 1.54 million from each facility — were sold by the U.S. Mint above face value in bags and rolls.

A Coin World reader tipped the magazine about finding the coins in circulation. aaaahhhhhh!!!!

This could be a repeat of 2021 where I received 2 full boxes in consecutive weeks of new 2021P halves. This week I went through a full box of halves and found 22 2022P and 17 2022D coins. Probably going to save them for the grandkids.

Well at least they stopped the production for circulation.

I will say that the store where I work has used halves for well over a year. Reason being that the bank they use are stingy with quarter orders. Most people seem to like them. A small few don't. But in any case they are still being used in commerce. That said, I haven't seen any new ones coming through. They work out pretty good, I rarely have to open a roll quarters.

Saturn- Are you hoping they won't produce that many, therefore they will be more expensive/desirable?

Because that won't happen.

@theforce

Giving half dollars in change makes perfect sense given the squeeze on quarters over the last couple years. Here in Boston, I've seen many people in tears looking for rolls of quarters just to do laundry or pay for parking... And giving half dollars also sounds like a great promotion given that so many people like them!

And for those few who complain, well, some people just hate everything.

PS: I bought a bag of half dollars from the Mint back in 2018 or 2019 and gave them out for Halloween. Kids love them.

NumismaticsFTW that's what I thought at first. The mint was going to make less Kennedys and way lower production. I thought there might command a higher price for higher grades. They have cut out making circulated ones but now I think there will not be a move in price.ugh
