Hard to tell, it could be all due to the sever zinc rot. It may be struck through but it would be a spender in this condition, at least before it rots away to dust... Gotta hate those zinc coins.

Is the area around the date slightly 'dished-in'? Those bubbles are evidence of zinc rot. The obverse appears to show emergent die deterioration--ridge ring showing the L in LIBERTY, on up through IN GOD...

I almost want to say the date was altered. The zinc rot in that area seems more progressed almost like it was ground down and exposed the zinc causing it to bubble faster.

Yes hard to know for sure, but those plating bubbles behind Abe's head worry me enough that this would be a spender for me regardless.

A little of both. Grease strike through over the date - obliterating it) all we know is it post 1982 and a zinc coin due to the zinc bubbles. I also see roller lines on the obverse - strangely enough, not on the Then there is the heavy reverse too. Then there is the damage - the "Grand Canyon" of twin gouged on the bust. Then there is the Ridge Ring at the top of the coin. All in all this is a 5-fer. with issues and that is only on the obverse, Don't even want to start in on the reverse SO! this coin is a total spender in my mind. |

 Strike through. Date looks dished. 1 & 9 are still partially evident. No marks showing as evidence of alteration of date. Bubbles could be during or after strike. My humble opinion. |

Pretty much a dud at this point. Looks like a RDV-005 reverse.

Advancing zinc rot makes the how/why irrelevant at this point. This coin has a death sentence now.  |
