I've seen striations due to Die Deterioration and polish lines left from a die polish but these appear unusual. There are lines that are crossing and are on both obverse and reverse sides. My thoughts tend to be with Die Deterioration and someone trying to clean with a wire brush. What do you think.

I'm thinking die abrasion, like from removing a die clash.

Yes, I agree. This looks like heavy die abrasion. I assumes that the lines would all go in one direction but just caught some of Coop's pics and they do show intersecting lines. The odd issue is that both dies look like they have the same issue with the reverse showing more wear.

@hew, while it isn't something I have studied, it seems pretty reasonable that a pair of dies previously clashed would both be abraded. I think your cent is pretty normal, but am glad that you are asking good questions.

Abrasions, yes. Nice toning, too bad about the spotting.

I agree, abrasions with chemical staining of some sort.

Also showing the type of polishing that DDD, Ridge Ring removed part of the devices and the fields reduced. Not a mint error, just a die events. The stains appear to have split the plating and is reacting with the zinc getting oxygen. Not a plus on the coin for anything of these die/strike events. No hub doubling, so it is not a doubled die.
