Note how the apparent doubling is moving towards the rim - this indicates DDD the die is wearing out and expanding outwards.

None of your suggestions. Not a DDO or DDR or Machine Doubling. This is a case of DDD.

The opposite is happening on Liberty as the DDD affects the devices towards the closest rim on the fields. So this is probably one of the first single squeeze dies seen on the obverse of the cent design. The design is a lower profile. So they may have started the doe changes earlier on the obverse dies. Never thought of this being that case. Will put if on the back burner for now until I research this a bit more. But it is DDD, extreme die wear that affects the fields, not the devices.

There is no value in a DDD. It is part of the minting process caused by a worn die
and there would have been tens of thousands of them produced before the die was retired.

Well when the die gets to that point, many coins can be struck. If they notice it, it can be polished and remove the DDD. The next step on these dies are the Ridge Ring showing up. So they may have caught this one after this and polished the die. But it is a common event on both sides of the coin for this to happen. It just is more interesting and probably some would pay a premium for a strong one. But they are common die events as the die ages.
